Online TEFL Courses Compared: Five Providers
Five well-known online TEFL providers compared by hours, tutor feedback, teaching practice, accreditation claims, job support and how pricing works.
CertificatesPublished
There is no single best online TEFL course. If you want to start tutoring online quickly, a tutor-supported course of around 120 hours is usually enough. If you plan to apply to schools abroad or want a qualification you can verify on a public register, look at the higher-level courses (often called Level 5) with some form of teaching practice. The five providers below are among the best-known names in the English-language TEFL market and all offer several course levels; what separates them is support, practice and how the course is assessed.
How we compare
This is an editorial desk comparison based on the providers’ published course information (as of October 2026), not a hands-on test. We do not award stars. We look at:
- Hours and level: what range of courses is offered, and whether a regulated option exists.
- Tutor feedback: are assignments marked by a person?
- Teaching practice: is there a classroom or live online element with real or peer learners?
- Accreditation claims: can they be checked independently?
- Job support: CV help, job boards, guidance on countries.
- Pricing model: list price, sales, extra fees for certificates or add-ons.

Provider notes
The TEFL Academy
A large provider with a clear focus on regulated higher-level courses. According to its website, the Level 5 course is 168 hours and can be combined with classroom sessions. Worth a look if you want a verifiable qualification and some in-person practice.
i-to-i TEFL
One of the longer-established names, with a broad catalogue from short introductory courses to higher-level options. Useful if you want to start with a smaller course and upgrade later. Check how much personal tutor feedback the specific course includes.
Premier TEFL
Offers courses at several levels and often bundles extras such as specialist modules. Bundles can be useful, but compare the core course first: a cheaper base course plus one relevant specialist module may serve you better than a large package.
The TEFL Org
Offers online courses at several levels and a classroom element on selected courses. A sensible option if you want regulated online study plus a structured route to some face-to-face practice.
TEFL.ie
Offers online courses including higher-level diplomas and, on selected courses, a practice component. Check the current format of the practice element and when it runs.
Which type of course fits your goal
| Goal | Course type to look for |
|---|---|
| Start tutoring on platforms soon | 120 hours or more, tutor-marked, flexible deadline |
| Language school abroad | Higher-level course plus some observed practice |
| Verifiable qualification for your CV | Regulated course you can find on the Ofqual register |
| Long-term career, competitive schools | Consider CELTA instead, see TEFL vs CELTA |

Pricing: what to watch
TEFL pricing is volatile. List prices are often reduced in frequent sales, and the same course can cost very different amounts within a month. Check:
- whether the certificate (digital or printed) costs extra,
- whether there is an extension fee if you miss the deadline,
- what “job support” actually means in practice,
- refund rules once you have started.
After the course
A certificate gets you into the application process; your profile and first lessons do the rest. Next steps: how to become an online language tutor, tutoring platforms compared and, if you want to move, teaching English abroad.

Frequently asked questions
Which online TEFL course do employers accept?
Most employers that ask for TEFL want a course of at least around 120 hours from a provider they can look up. For competitive jobs, regulated higher-level courses or courses with observed teaching practice are viewed more favourably.
Are discounted TEFL courses worth it?
Discounts are common in this market and do not say much about quality. Compare what the course includes: tutor-marked work, practice, deadlines and certificate fees.
Do I need a Level 5 course for online teaching?
Usually not. Many online platforms accept a 120-hour TEFL or no certificate at all. Level 5 courses are more useful if you plan to apply to schools or need a verifiable qualification for your CV.
Can I get a refund if I change my mind?
Refund terms differ by provider and often depend on how much of the course you have opened. Read the terms before you start the first module.
